Youth Missions Trip 2008
Rolling hills, abundant wildlife and dense forests are signatures of Coastal Maine and the town of Calais. Amidst the breathtaking scenery, however, some residents of Calais are struggling with poverty. This summer our group will shine the light of Jesus in this community and support local families through children’s programs, partnering with social service organizations to work with the elderly and assisting with home improvement projects. We will be leaving August 2nd and returning August 9th. The cost is $300 per student. We have limited space available. If you are interested in going on the missions trip, please email Jamie McBride.
Fundraising
We are encouraging all the youth to individually look for opportunities to raise fund for this trip. We currently do not have any official fundraising activities scheduled. If you would like to help organize a fundraising event or you would like to help sponsor a youth either completely or partially please contact Jamie McBride.
About Calais Maine
Located on the St. Croix River and the Canadian border, the town of Calais in Washington County features some of the most unspoiled scenery in Maine. Visitors can enjoy hunting, kayaking, white-water rafting, hiking and more at a variety of interesting spots. The Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge—a breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife—encompasses 24,500 acres. Nearly 4,000 residents make their home in Calais, with 20 percent of residents age 65 or older. The regional population is 15,000. Currently, retail, service and construction are the primary components of the Calais economy. The town also has been working to revitalize its downtown area. While visitors enjoy the scenery, a closer look at the town and its residents reveals areas of poverty and economic struggle. Nearly 17 percent of the population lives below the poverty line, including almost 20 percent of residents under the age of 18 and 19 percent of those age 65 or older.
